Big Sweep - your chance to make a difference

If this blog has inspired you to do something about plastic pollution, here’s a way to get involved. Big Sweep is an annual cleanup of our waterways and the North Carolina component of the International Coastal Cleanup.

In New Hanover County, Big Sweep will be held on Sept 26 at 9am at Wrightsville Beach(meet at Johnny Mercer Pier), Carolina Beach (meet at the Boardwalk Gazebo), Kure Beach(meet at the Pier), and Greenfield Lake(meet at the boathouse).

There’s no need to register beforehand; just show up prepared to be outside for a couple of hours – think sunscreen, appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes, and water. Bags, gloves, snacks, and datacards will be provided.

The datacards are what make the International Coastal Cleanup unique. They provide very local stats; we know that 3,585 cigarette butts were picked up during one morning event last year in New Hanover County, North Carolina because of the volunteer effort to fill them out while collecting trash. When our cleanup data is added to the data from around the world, they provide large scale, international information, too. Please visit this site to see which countries participated, what the top 10 items collected have been throughout the years, and other ways to be pro-active. http://www.oceanconservancy.org/site/PageServer?pagename=icc_home

I’m so inspired I might actually use a Facebook application to see which ocean is my ocean….

  1. Bonnie,
What a terrific adventure! We miss you back here in Wilmington and are looking forward to hearing the details of your trip at the next meeting of the "Ladies Sunday Afternoon Social Hour." You'll have to explain that to your crewmates! We are so in awe of what you are doing. Safe Sailing, Gail
